If you are planning a Commitment Ceremony of any sort, CONGRATULATIONS! Your outward declaration and promise to cherish each other throughout all the chapters of your lives may well be the culmination of months, sometimes years of careful planning. Your 'Happy Ever After' deserves to be marked with a Ceremony of distinction without restriction - one that reflects you as individuals and honours your shared values. Just remember to sort out the necessary legal paperwork with your Register Office if you are getting Married or entering into Civil Partnership, and you are free to embark on your shared story, with the Ceremony of your dreams!
Whether you want traditional or modern, if 'Go big or go home' is your mantra for life, then a big beautiful Wedding surrounded by the all your nearest and dearest might be the perfect setting for your new story
Big on style but with a smaller guest list, Micro-Weddings and Ceremonies are for couples who want to invest their budget on an incredible venue, cuisine, decadent detailing or an amazing destination
Moving away from secret Elopements of old, where couples 'ran away' to get married, modern Elopements are beautiful intimate ceremonies just for the couple, or shared with a few family or friends, and are gaining popularity for couples wanting a personal, but much more private ceremony
A Minimony, usually smaller on numbers, is a paired down, shorter mini Ceremony, sometimes followed with a small reception or a bigger party afterwards, and are perfect for those who want a simple start to their shared book of life
Renewal of Vows Ceremonies, often mark an anniversary, but can also be in recognition of life's challenges, symbolising your enduring or renewed commitment to each other, all over again!
'Traditional' Marriage doesn’t always fit with everyone’s ideologies; Civil Partnerships enable you to formalise and recognise your commitment to each other (and gain greater legal and financial security than that offered by living together)
Handfasting, is a symbolic Celtic sacred ceremony, widely accepted as being one of the oldest known unity rituals, where couples’ wrists are bound together to mark an engagement or lifelong promise of commitment. The colours used in the ties each have a symbolic meaning, blessing, and strengthening the connection of the union - effectively ‘tying the knot’.
While Wiccan and Pagan ceremonies take place in a circle, drawing in nature-related rituals where the elements of fire, water, earth, and air are symbolically recognised, reaffirming the couple’s connection to the earth, the circle of life, and the unbreakable infinite bond of their union, as more couples embrace bespoke Celebrant ceremonies, Handfasting’s growing popularity, is making way for more modern interpretations, and can be incorporated into any ceremony that unites individuals as one. Certainly, the film Braveheart and the Game of Thrones series, with scenes depicting handfasting ceremonies, may also have contributed to the increasing appeal in what is a simple but beautifully romantic ritual ceremony dating back thousands of years.
Love the idea of an Independent Celebrant led Ceremony? Join the club! For couples getting Married or opting for a Civil Partnership, you must follow the formal legal registration process to make your commitment lawfully binding. The good news is that you won’t have to double up on your budget and pay for another full Registrar led Ceremony at your local Register Office, you can simply opt for a basic legal Statutory registration (which is essentially signing the legal paperwork) and have the Celebrant Ceremony you dreamed of.
This information is subject to change. You must speak to your local Council Register Office for full and current details and to establish your nearest Register Office that offers basic Statutory registration.
Not a problem! Most Regiser offices will only offer random midweek appointment slots for legal Marriage or Civil Partnership registrations, so most couples choosing Independent Celebrant Ceremonies, often try to book their legal registration either a few days before or after their actual 'big day', however it is no unusual for some couples to do the legal registration weeks, months or even years before or after their Ceremony and Wedding day. The only thing that changes if you are not completing the legal papertwork until after your Wedding, is that your chosen Celebrant cannot lawfully pronounce you ‘Married’ during the Ceremony. In this instance, Celebrants simply ‘tweak’ the words they weave into the service, for example, introducing you as the Happy Couple, rather than Husband and Wife, allowing you to still have your chosen Celebrant Wedding Ceremony, even if you are not yet lawfully married, giving you so much freedom around when, where and what time you want to have your Ceremony.
Nope!...unless you want them to, but as every couple considers their 'actual wedding or commitment' to be the date they have their Celebrant Ceremony, rock their wedding outfits, and light up the dancefloor at the after party, most couples dont feel the need to mention this at all. Afterall, the Ceremony itself (rather than the legal form filling) is where the real magic happens and that is the date that everyone remembers and celebrates
