Throughout the world, irrespective of religious, spiritual beliefs, or none whatsoever, Funerals play a crucial role in the grieving process, helping individuals and communities express their grief, honour and remember the deceased in shared respect and love, reflect upon all that person has meant to them and (even when Funeral Services may have been incredibly difficult) help support individuals towards finding some closure. The tangible power of Funerals in profoundly supporting those left grieving to navigate their personal journey through loss, should not be underestimated
Independant Celebrants can weave in all the things that matter to you or your loved ones, warmth, tradition, quirky elements, reverence and respect, humour, blended faiths, religion or spirituality, honouring the values of the person, but more importantly, placing the focus on the person we are there to remember, say goodbye to, or bid a fond farewell until we meet again! One of the most uplifting Funerals I have taken to date was STAR WARS themed and it would have meant so much to the beautiful soul I was there to celebrate whose love of STAR WARS was a huge passion in their life. I truly believe the loved ones we gather to honour would have wanted to us remember them with smiles not tears. There will never be a 'wrong way' to do that, where we place that individual at the very heart of their service, honouring them in the way that they would have appreciated.
For many of us, losing someone who has been part of the fabric of our life sets us on one of life’s loneliest and overwhelming journeys, especially when we want to ‘do right’ by that person but are not quite sure how!
No two people are the same, so no two Funerals should be the same. Increasingly Funerals are evolving into wonderful Celebrations of life, rather than solemn mourning of death. Countless chapels filled with smiles, laughter, singing, even dancing and an impromtu Zumba class are my proof of that. Gone are the days where mourning was the expectation, and nothing else was deemed appropriate. Even though we continue to mourn we are now beginning to embrace the life, love and the legacy of those we cherish and weaving those into Funerals, Memorials and Celebrations of life, in the most wonderful ways.
Just a little note for the forward thinkers amongst you, who would like to write the closing chapter of their own story, because not only can you plan your own Funeral, in terms of how, and where you would like it to take place, what music you would like and even write your own story or letters to loved ones that can be shared on the day, but you can take part in proceedings while you are still very much in the land of the living through a Living WIshes Celebration of Life. I am increasingly being invited to take Celebrations and Memorials where the guest of honour is still here in person to take an active part in proceedings! They are bittersweet but brilliant and can be wonderfully empowering, liberating, cathartic and fun!
How many times have you attended a Wake or a Memorial and heard others say....he/she would have loved to be here with all their family and friends!; this is your life, so what's stopping you taking the lead in how it is remembered, recognised or celebrated?
No matter what your personal spiritual or religious beliefs may or may not be, scattering ashes at sea ceremonies, brings a feeling that we are touched by Heaven here on Earth, and offers a beautiful, intimate, and thoughful way to release the last pyhsical part of our loved ones in a way that can leave us with a lasting feeling of peace and release that is tangible. Knowing your loved one is eternally free, connected to you, the earth, the oceans, the stars and the sky; unbounded once more is profoundly comforting. I am privileged to work with a wonderful crew offering these beautiful ceremonies and services
Ash Internment or Scattering Ceremonies, can be truly beautiful but are often overlooked when those mourning loved ones will have invariably been invested in arranging and moving past Funerals. Often deeply intimate, these Ceremonies, allow people to gather in a shared last act of love and respect for the person they are remembering. Ceremonies are brief but can bring great comfort and a sense of closure and peace in knowing loved ones have been afforded that final dignity and release.
Cremation Fireworks, (sometimes called Memorial Fireworks) are created using a small amount of your loved ones ashes, offering a wonderfully uplifting Ceremony filled with light, colour and sparkle. They are visually wonderful and a great choice for those of you who want to leave this world, quite literally with a bang! What a way to close your book of life!
